To me, making documentaries is like stepping into a completely new environment. I can't come up with an idea and then simply film it - transfer my imagination into pictures or a finished form.[...] I always aim to talk about simple things, independent of the socio-political situation. To me, the politics can be entirely pushed aside, it is never a starting point for me.

- Wojciech Staron

Wojciech Staron's award-winning Argentinian Lesson (Argentynska Lekcja, 2011) will screen in Documentary Fortnight 2012: MoMA's International Festival of Nonfiction Film and Media at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The two week showcase (Feb 16-28, 2012) of international documentary presents films from a wide range of creative categories that extend the idea of the documentary form, examine the relationship between contemporary art and nonfiction filmmaking, and reflect on new areas of nonfiction practice.

Argentinian Lesson - a continuation of Staron's critically acclaimed Siberian Lesson from 1998 - focuses on Janek, a young Polish boy in Argentina whose mother teaches the language to the Polish immigrants. While Janek tries to adapt to the landscape of this new foreign land by forming a relationship with 11-year-old Marcia, his filmmaker father captures the awakening of their friendship and the beauty of their shared moments.
